Throughout my education path, I have always had an interest
in STEM subjects with a flare for computer science and technology. After
completing my GCSE’s, I moved onto a BTEC extended diploma in IT &
Business to give me the additional technical knowledge I needed to go to the University
of Lincoln to do a Computer Information Systems degree.
I decided to take a placement year between 2nd and 3rd
year of my degree. I ended up landing a placement with General Electric in the
Power industry focusing on powerplants and gas turbines. Whilst at GE, I
proposed a project to help improve data quality which ended up saving $1
billion annually for the business which was great exposure both internally and
externally for further job interviews.
At the end of my degree, I graduated with a 1 st class
degree in Computer Information Systems with placement year. Not only that, received
an award for Outstanding Achievement for the School of Computer Science for my
extracurricular efforts at open days and more. Following this, I was extremely
lucky to have got a graduate scheme job at Whitbread.
The scheme is rotational every 3 – 6 months and I will gain
insight into a range of areas. My first 3 months has been spent in the Service
Delivery team looking at reporting and how we can enhance and configure tools
to create better data. I am now coming up to the end of my first rotation at
the company and will be moving to become a Project Lead for the Premier Inn
Germany Expansion. This will include travel to Germany, managing large projects
in a small team which will provide me with a lot of responsibility.
Not only has my graduate scheme enabled me to get work
experience in a rapid changing industry, it has also provided me with soft
skills. I am confident in pitching ideas to others, engaging in conversations
with several levels of seniority and enjoy getting involved in fundraising. If
it wasn’t for the support of University of Lincoln, I would not be where I am
now. My main advice to current students is to always get involved in something
no matter of size big or small, always contribute your ideas and inspire to
impress others.
